Betaine HCl Overview
As we age, production of digestive enzymes and all-important hydrochloric acid weakens. This is the main reason why the elderly often have trouble digesting foods. Hydrochloric acid is particularly important, since without it, our naturally-produced enzymes like pepsin never become activated and functional. Betaine HCl is the stable, supplement form of hydrochloric acid, safe and effective when taken orally. NOW Betaine HCL also includes pepsin enzyme to supplement your natural production. Hydrochloric acid supplements can be an enormous help to those who feel bloated and uncomfortable after any meal, but should be used with caution when heartburn or acid reflux are present.
Betaine HCl Description from Now
NOW Betaine HCI is formulated to support proper digestive conditions in the stomach. Hydrochloric Acid (HCI) is normally produced in the stomach, where it assists protein digestion by activating pepsin, helps to maintain a healthy balance of gut flora, and stimulates the release of intestinal enzymes. Pepsin is a protease produced in the stomach that partially breaks down proteins in foods. HCI production tends to decline with age, so supplementing with HCI and pepsin may help to maintain normal digestive function. This product uses a vegetarian acid-stable protease with activity equivalent to that of animal-derived pepsin.
