The Holy Basil plant has a very long history in traditional Ayurvedic practices. In traditional Ayurvedic practices, Holy Basil, or Tulsi (its Hindu name) is worshipped for its ability to support overall health and wellness.** The leaves, seeds, roots and flower have been used in ancient preparations.
Because Holy Basil is believed to promote purity and lightness in the body it is also referred to as the “elixir of life.” In fact, the translation of Tulsi in Hindu identifies this herb as “the incomparable one.”1 In India, many families keep a living Tulsi plant in their homes and tend to it with great care as it is considered to be an incarnation of the goddess Tulsi, and offers divine protection.2
Holy Basil contains phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are compounds that are found in plant substances, such as flavonoids or carotenoids.
Traditional Indian spices and Ayurvedic herbs may prove to be sources of natural phytochemicals.3 The nutritional properties of Holy Basil are considered to help aid in vitality, and Holy Basil contains no stimulants like caffeine.3
